Nick van Marken

Following a career in professional services spanning 30 years, Nick is currently acting as an adviser to several hospitality investors. Until recently he was a senior partner with Deloitte LLP and Global Head of Hospitality Advisory Services, based in London. In this role, he served a wide spectrum of clients, including private family/HNWI’s; PE; SWF; institutional; RE; and corporates, and encompassing owners, investors, lenders and operators. The range of services included M&A; commercial strategy and development advice; due diligence; operational/profit improvement reviews; capital-raising/IPOs; assurance; tax advice, and restructuring. He served on the Board of STR between 2011 and 2017.
Nick spent the early part of his career in hotel operations in South Africa - with both Holiday Inn and Sun International. He subsequently worked in Europe with both Gleneagles and Meridien, and then joined PKF where he was based in London and Hong Kong. He thereafter spent 20 years with Arthur Andersen and Deloitte where he was responsible for establishing and managing the Gulf-based Middle East & Africa practice. Nick has worked in over 70 countries globally, but Africa is where he most enjoys spending time.
Nick has been involved in a number of very significant transactions in Africa. In the mid-1990’s he was a key adviser to KHI, as they commenced the funding of an expansion of Four Seasons, Movenpick and Fairmont on the continent. He also assisted Tsogo Sun with their strategy in Southern Africa, as they transitioned to the company we see today. Perhaps most notable, however, is his role in advising Marriott International in their acquisition of Protea (2013), and CDC in their investment in Onomo Hotels (2017); where he continues to work with the shareholders in an advisory capacity. The latter transactions represent the largest international equity investments in the hotel industry in Africa.
