Wayne Koonce has over the past 30 years compiled a notable real estate M&A record. As president or managing director of real estate merchant banking firms, he has orchestrated over $8 billion of hotel, resort and mixed-use transactions.
He engineered the acquisition of Inter-Continental Hotels (109 first-class hotels worldwide - $2.3 billion) – at the time (1989) the largest hotel deal ever done.
His list of credits includes La Costa Hotel and Spa ($250 million), Washington Harbour ($250 million), the Hyatt Regency Waikiki ($245 million), Hotel Washington ($119 million), Hotel Hana Maui ($100 million), the Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat ($30 million), the Dana Point Resort ($40 million) and the Drake Hotel ($55 million). He engineered the formation of a partnership, including $165 million of equity and debt financing, to develop the Peninsula Hotel as the keystone of a large mixed-use development at 730 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago.
He currently is active in Latin America, the United States and Europe, with a strong interest in sustainable development in Africa.
Koonce received his Bachelor's degree with highest honors from the University of Illinois, a Master's degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University, and a Juris Doctor degree with honors from the Harvard Law School.
Honors include the Henry Luce Scholarship, the Danforth Fellowship, the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, the Max-Rheinstein Prize in International Law, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa.
